PHYSIOTHERAPY
WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that assesses, diagnoses, treats, and works to prevent disease, injury and pain. Physiotherapy aims to restore optimal physical function and performance by addressing imbalances or dysfunction that may cause pain and reduced mobility.
Physiotherapists can treat a wide range of physical conditions including:
back and neck pain
muscle strains
joint sprains
headaches
sports injuries
paediatric growth-related conditions
arthritis
sciatica
post-operative rehabilitation
Physiotherapists are extensively trained in manual therapy, which means we use “hands on” physical techniques to improve movement, reduce pain and stiffness, and speed up the healing process.
These techniques may include
Joint mobilisation and manipulation
Massage and muscular release
Trigger point therapy
Stretching
Dry needling
postural and biomechanical retraining
Physiotherapists will also give advice and education regarding guided and home exercises, postural and movement re-education and balance retraining.
An initial physiotherapy consultation involves a thorough assessment and informed diagnosis which considers relevant symptoms and your medical history. Other factors which may be contributing to or exacerbating your condition will also be assessed- these may include poor posture, poor technique or ergonomics. You and your physiotherapist will use this information together to create an individualised plan for your treatment and rehabilitation, taking into account your work/recreation/sporting needs and goals to ensure a quick return to a healthier and happier life.
